As part of our studies of the Victorians, Year 6 visited Shire Hall in Dorchester, the historic courthouse famed for the trials of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, Martha Brown and many more.

The class turned detective for the day, and, using primary sources of information, found out about the sad sad story of Elijah Upjohn – a young boy in poverty who turned to a life of crime.

After visiting the cells, they enacted a short play involving all the known characters in his story, experiencing the emotions of all involved.

A very thought-provoking day, and a fabulous historical experience for Year 6.
