Welcome to Year 6
Year 6 is the final class in St Nicholas and St Laurence Primary School and is a fantastic year, where children are given responsibilities as the role models and leaders of the school. We will do our utmost throughout the year to ensure that every child is fully prepared for the transition to their Secondary School, leaving our school with the confidence to take the next step in their learning.
The class teacher is Mrs Neale, with Mrs Bedford supporting as the teaching assistant every morning. We are also regularly supported in teaching by many others including Mrs Henman, Mrs Simons and Mrs Wakefield. There will be a Year 6 information evening in the Autumn Term. Please come along to meet us and of course to ask any questions.
Our students will receive a broad, balanced and exciting curriculum which will enable them to achieve their very best. In the first half of the Autumn Term of Year 6 this year, our topic will be ‘Hola Mexico!’
In 2020, SATs will be held from Monday 11th May to Thursday 14th May. Our year 6 students will be prepared for these throughout the year, building upon the outstanding teaching from their previous teachers. We believe that each child will achieve their best if they attend school regularly and we thank you for supporting us with this.
Please do not hesitate to speak to the class teacher if you have any questions or would like to know more about how you can support your child’s learning.
Students are expected to have a full PE kit in school at all times. Although we have regular slots for PE, the timetable is subject to change.
Homework will be set on Friday with an expectation that, if there is any written work, it will be returned by the following Thursday.
Spellings will be tested on Thursdays.
Please encourage regular practice of spelling patterns with Spelling Frame (online) and reading comprehension through the use of Lexia. Completing Lexia by the end of Year 6 independently is a very strong predictor of success in the final end of year assessments.
Please continue to read with and listen to your child as they read to you, even if they are a confident reader. This will help them with confidence and the ability to entertain the listener through expression.
Times tables knowledge is supported by TT Rockstars online and the children will practise three different tables per week. They can also practise different skills online using Mathletics.
Transfer to Secondary School
Transfer to Secondary School In the autumn term of Year 6, the Education Authority will request that you give your preferences for secondary schools in the area.
Historically the majority of our pupils transfer to The Wey Valley School. The other options for pupils from this area are Budmouth College, Isle of Portland Aldridge Community Academy (Royal Manor Campus) Portland & All Saints.
You will be notified of Open Evenings given by the four secondary schools in October, which you may wish to attend.
Our links with local schools are there to ensure as smooth a transfer as possible and staff from secondary schools are always willing to meet parents individually wherever possible, to answer questions.
