Welcome to Year 6
This is the final class in St Nicholas and St Laurence Primary School. The class teacher is Mrs Neale, with Mrs Bedford supporting as the teaching assistant every morning. We will also be regularly supported in teaching by Mrs Morris, Mrs Henman, Mrs Barber, Mrs Simons and Mrs Wakefield. We will do our utmost to ensure that every child is fully prepared for the transition to their Secondary School, leaving our school with the confidence to take this next step in their learning.
Our students will receive a broad, balanced and exciting curriculum which will enable them to achieve their very best. In Year 6 this year, the students will be studying ‘The Ancient Greeks’ in the Autumn Term, asking ‘What is the best way for a Muslim to show commitment to God?’ in RE, learning about ‘Light’ in Science, and ‘Food, Seasonality and Cooking’ in Design and Technology. We ensure that the arts support the learning, through music, dance and art.
This is also of course SATs year, so our year 6 students will be prepared for these throughout the year, building upon the outstanding teaching from their previous teachers.
We believe that each child will achieve their best if they attend school regularly and we thank you for supporting us with this.
Year 6 is a fantastic year, where children are given responsibilities as the role models and leaders of the school. Don’t be surprised if you hear one of our Year 6 students answering the phone at lunchtime, or greeting you at school reception!
Please do not hesitate to speak to the class teacher if you have any questions or would like to know more.
Students are expected to have a full PE kit in school at all times. Although we have regular slots for PE, the timetable is subject to change.
Homework will continue to be set on Friday with an expectation that it will be returned by Thursday. This will include spellings, which will be tested on Thursdays. Please continue to read with and listen to your child as they read, even if they are a confident reader. This will help them with confidence and the ability to entertain the listener through expression.
Transfer to Secondary School
Transfer to Secondary School In the autumn term of Year 6, the Education Authority will request that you give your preferences for secondary schools in the area.
Historically the majority of our pupils transfer to The Wey Valley School. The other options for pupils from this area are Budmouth College, Isle of Portland Aldridge Community Academy (Royal Manor Campus) Portland & All Saints.
You will be notified of Open Evenings given by the four secondary schools in October, which you may wish to attend.
Our links with local schools are there to ensure as smooth a transfer as possible and staff from secondary schools are always willing to meet parents individually wherever possible, to answer questions.
